Philosophy

Nursing is a professional discipline concerned with the promotion of health, the prevention and treatment of disease, and the alleviation of human suffering. The faculty ascribes to the belief that the purpose of nursing is to impact health outcomes by promoting the well-being and empowerment of individuals, families, groups, and communities in dynamic health care settings.

The administration, faculty, staff, and students of the LSU Health New Orleans School of Nursing believe that professional nursing accomplishes these goals through a blend of health care sciences, clinical expertise, and caring practices. Nursing care addresses specific features of human environments that impact individuals’ responses to health care and is sensitive to cultural diversity. Nursing collaborates with other disciplines by enhancing academic excellence, building research programs and research culture, strengthening affiliations and partnerships, improving visibility and recognition, and increasing organizational effectiveness to promote human wholeness and healing within a caring environment.

Nine Core Values embody the relationship between the individual and the School of Nursing: Stewardship, Organizational Citizenship, Nursing Innovation, Caring, Professionalism, Respect, Integrity, Diversity, and Excellence. Curricula are designed to prepare the student to meet the professional standards that define the role of the nurse at the baccalaureate, master’s and doctoral levels.

The School of Nursing’s philosophy supports the mission of LSU Health New Orleans through effective communication and continuous quality improvement. The philosophy also promotes excellence in the endeavors of teaching, research, scholarship, service, and nursing practice benefiting the citizens of the State of Louisiana.
