The Externship in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery is designed for dental students who wish to apply to Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery residency programs. This program allows students to rotate with Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery faculty and Residents in the operating room and clinics.
During the Externship week, Students will assist Residents with patient care in the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery outpatient clinic and operating room as well as daily morning rounds. Cases include dental alveolar surgery, facial trauma, odontogenic infections, head and neck oncology, orthognathic surgery, TMJ surgery, craniofacial surgery, facial cosmetic surgery, and IV sedations. The 1-week externship includes the following daily rotations:
Monday-Head & Neck Oncology clinic, TMJ Clinic & Cosmetic Clinic. Ambulatory Surgery Center - TMJ Endoscopic surgery, facial cosmetic surgery.
Tuesday-operating room at Touro hospital. This rotation includes surgeries in benign and malignant head & neck tumors and microvascular reconstruction.
Wednesday-operating room at the Lady of the Lake hospital in Baton Rouge.
Thursday-rotation with Dr. Jon Perenack (facial cosmetics clinic and Surgery Center) in Baton Rouge.
Friday-operating room at University Medical Center in New Orleans (facial trauma).
Transportation to all sites will be provided. Housing in New Orleans and Baton Rouge is also provided.
Students will have the opportunity to interact with faculty and residents and ask questions related to the field of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery. They will also be able to attend any academic seminars or journal clubs scheduled for the week.
